Kelly Mertz

Kelly Mertz joined our legal team as an Intake Assistant in 2022, while she was in her final year of law school at the City University of New York. Since graduating from law school and taking the bar examination in July of 2023, Kelly continues to work in the intake department at times, but primarily supports the attorneys as a Litigation Paralegal.

Kelly holds a Juris Doctorate from the City University of New York Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from American University in Washington D.C., and graduated from both schools summa cum laude.  As a law student, Kelly assisted survivors of intimate partner violence in immigration matters as a part of the CUNY Family Law Practice Clinic. During law school, and she also worked with HIV+ clients in housing and disability discrimination matters. She has researched and presented health care “Know Your Rights” workshops for non-citizens, and assisted individuals in completing and submitting their applications for citizenship. Her area of research expertise is opioid litigation, and most recently she has written on New York State medical malpractice liability in failure to administer Medically-Assisted Treatment to incarcerated individuals.

Prior to going to law school, Kelly’s professional experience includes coalition building with community organizations to fill service gaps in the Bronx, health and educational programs & service coordination for low income residents in Brownsville, Brooklyn, maintaining client relationships and new employee training in the medical digital marketing field, and teaching in after school and gardens programs for youth.

Kelly has worked and studied in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Haiti, Belgium, and France. She has fluency speaking French, and is proficient in Spanish and Italian. Currently, Kelly resides in Brooklyn and visits her family regularly on Long Island in in NYC. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, spending time in Prospect Park, seeing live music, and traveling.
